MAJ Welcomes New Leadership

Maryland Association for Justice Celebrates 61th Annual President’s Dinner

On May 3rd, 2014, the Maryland Association for Justice, Inc. (MAJ) gathered at the Hilton Baltimore Hotel to celebrate the association’s 61th Annual President’s Dinner, welcoming new leadership and honoring excellence in the legal community.

The highlight of the evening’s events was the transition of the association’s leadership; outgoing President Lawrence S. Greenberg passed the “Bronze Bell of Justice,” a symbol of the association, to incoming President David M. Kopstein.

Following his installation as President, Mr. Kopstein welcomed the other newest MAJ officers: President-Elect David V. Diggs of Kahn, Smith & Collins, PA in Baltimore; Vice President Philip C. Federico of Schochor, Federico & Staton, PA in Baltimore; Secretary Thomas G. Yost, Jr. of The Yost Legal Group, LLC in Baltimore; Treasurer Elisha N. Hawk of Janet, Jenner & Suggs, LLC in Baltimore; and Parliamentarian David J. Wildberger of Iliff, Meredith, Wildberger & Brennan, PC in Pasadena.

Mr. Kopstein is Principal Attorney at The Law Office of Kopstein & Associates, LLC in Seabrook, Maryland. Mr. Kopstein graduated from the Georgetown University Law Center with the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1979. He was admitted to the D.C. Bar in 1979, and to the Maryland and Virginia Bars in 1989. He is a Fellow of the National College of Advocacy and is currently a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the Maryland Association for Justice, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, the Prince George’s County Bar Association, and the Fairfax Bar Association. In 2004, Mr. Kopstein was honored by Justice Stephen Breyer of the United States Supreme Court and others for his
participation in Trial Lawyers Care, an organization that provided free legal services to victims of the September 11th attacks. In 2007, 2010 and 2011, Mr. Kopstein was recognized by The Virginia Lawyers Weekly for having obtained one of the twenty largest verdicts in that state during each of those years.

Also recognized during the evening’s festivities were award winners for Trial Lawyer of the Year and the Simon K. Walton Civil Justice Award.

John B. Bratt and Rodney M. Gaston, were named the 2014 Trial Lawyers of the Year for their zealous advocacy and the important legal precedent created in The Brethren Mutual Insurance Company v. Ember Louise Buckley, Case No. 10, September Term, 2013, helping ensure victims of automobile crashes receive justice and fair compensation from their insurer.

Joel D. Feldman, founder of End Distracted Driving, was honored with the Simon K. Walton Civil Justice Award his efforts to preserve life, promote safety, and eliminate distracted driving through advocacy, education, and action.


The evening’s special guest speaker was Howard County Executive Ken Ulman.
